Israeli Police Arrest Illegal Palestinian Driver Using Phone While Operating Heavy Vehicle on Highway 5
During a routine traffic enforcement operation on Highway 5, Israeli National Traffic Police officers stopped a 43-year-old Palestinian man from Qalqilya driving a heavy engineering vehicle (tractor) while using a mobile phone, a serious traffic violation. Upon further inspection, officers discovered the driver was residing in Israel illegally without any valid permits. The driver admitted to using the phone, saying, "I was playing with the phone, I made a mistake." The police officer responded firmly, requesting his driver's license and then questioned him about his legal status in Israel.
The officers immediately took action by confiscating the heavy vehicle and removing it from the road to prevent further danger to other road users. The driver was issued a traffic fine of 1,000 shekels and eight demerit points for the mobile phone use violation. He was also arrested on the spot for illegal presence and driving without proper authorization, and transferred for further investigation.
The police highlighted the compounded risk posed by operating heavy vehicles without knowledge of local traffic laws combined with distracted driving due to mobile phone use. The incident was recorded on police body cameras, capturing the interaction and the driver’s admission. Authorities stressed the importance of strict enforcement to deter such hazardous behavior on major traffic routes.
