Israeli Police End High-Speed Chase on Highway 1, Arrest Palestinian Driver with Knives and Fake Plates
A dramatic police chase unfolded overnight on Highway 1 in Israel when officers from the Gilad region traffic unit, along with volunteers from the Beqaa station, spotted a white Skoda speeding at 162 km/h. The driver ignored police orders to stop and fled, endangering other road users by weaving dangerously at speeds exceeding 170 km/h. The pursuit was captured on police body and vehicle cameras, showing the tense moments as officers called for roadblocks to trap the vehicle at the Almog junction.
The chase ended swiftly when police successfully blocked the junction and stopped the car. Officers immediately exited their vehicle, drew weapons, and ordered the driver out. The suspect, an 18-year-old Palestinian from Ramallah with no driving license, was found to be carrying two knives, one on his person and another inside the vehicle, and the car had fake license plates. He was arrested, interrogated at the Maale Adumim station, and his detention was extended by court order until the following day.
This incident was part of a broader police crackdown targeting dangerous traffic violations and road violence in the West Bank. During the operation, other drivers were caught speeding excessively, including a 20-year-old East Jerusalem resident driving at 154 km/h without a license and an 18-year-old Israeli citizen driving at 192 km/h. Additionally, a 58-year-old Palestinian truck driver was arrested for driving while banned by court order. All suspects were summoned for court hearings.
The Israeli police emphasized their ongoing commitment to zero tolerance against traffic offenses that endanger public safety, aiming to protect lives on West Bank roads and beyond.
