The Israeli Tax Authority arrested David Ohana, a resident of Rehovot, on suspicion of operating shell companies to distribute and offset fake invoices and committing tax offenses. Ohana had evaded investigation for an extended period before being located in a hotel suite in Hadera, where he continued managing his companies and proxies remotely. The arrest took place on Thursday during an operation by the Beersheba Customs and VAT Investigation Unit, with support from the Tax Authority's intelligence unit and Hadera police.

Investigators suspect that Ohana attempted to obstruct justice through his son, who was previously caught destroying documents and seals at their home by burning them on a grill and using a garden hose to eliminate further evidence. The son was arrested but later released under restrictive conditions. Using technological means, authorities tracked Ohana’s whereabouts and arrested him after several days of surveillance.

During the hotel search, officials seized computers, mobile phones, and lawyers’ seals allegedly used to sign forged documents, along with other evidence. This case is part of the Tax Authority’s ongoing crackdown on fake invoices and shell companies. The government has expanded the use of the "Israeli Invoices" system to monitor invoices as a condition for input tax deductions, which has improved tax collection but also led criminals to adopt more sophisticated methods.

The Beersheba Magistrate’s Court extended Ohana’s detention until Thursday, August 13. The investigation is ongoing, and the charges against him have not yet been adjudicated in court.
