Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz removed Central Command Chief Avi Blot live on air following intense political pressure from right-wing circles. The conflict escalated after Katz signed a confidentiality waiver in the Talie Gutlib case, enabling her indictment, which angered many Likud members who support Gutlib. Since then, Gutlib has aggressively campaigned against Katz, criticizing his decisions and damaging his standing within the party.

The immediate trigger for the dismissal was the arrest of Tal Yinon Dradik, an administrative detainee from the Binyamin settlement bloc, suspected of violent acts and sexual abuse against Palestinians during an incident in the Jordan Valley. Dradik’s detention and subsequent hunger strike sparked protests from right-wing lawmakers, activists, and rabbis, who blamed both Katz and Blot for the situation. Katz, who personally visited Dradik in detention, responded by firing Blot in a live broadcast.

However, this move backfired as Blot is highly regarded among settlers and considered the most right-wing Central Command chief in two decades, praised by Religious Zionism Minister Bezalel Smotrich. Many settlement leaders and influential figures like Ophir Winter condemned Katz’s decision, causing political damage within the right-wing and Likud.

In an attempt to mitigate the fallout, Katz convened a meeting with Judea and Samaria council heads and issued a joint statement affirming Blot’s commendable performance. The episode also raised broader concerns about the politicization of security appointments, suggesting future governments might dismiss heads of security agencies who do not align with political directives. Katz’s remarks implied that non-compliance with political leadership could lead to removal, signaling potential instability for security chiefs under changing administrations.
