Defense Minister Israel Katz sparked controversy after announcing on Channel 14, the Likud-affiliated network, his intention to dismiss IDF Central Command Chief Major General Avi Blot. IDF sources strongly criticized Katz’s statement in a conversation with Kan News, calling the decision "absurd" and accusing Katz of treating the IDF as a branch of the Likud party. The IDF spokesperson clarified that the move was not coordinated with Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, who has no plans to replace Blot, praising his leadership amid complex security challenges.

Chief of Staff Zamir informed senior officers that no new generals will be appointed until early 2027 due to the ongoing election cycle, effectively ensuring Blot remains in his post until at least summer 2027. Military analyst Yossi Yehoshua noted this decision aims to provide stability to senior officers amid heightened tensions, including ongoing conflicts in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, and the looming threat from Iran.

The controversy followed Blot’s recent appeal against a restriction order on Tal Yinon Dardik, a detainee accused of abusing Palestinians. Retired Brigadier General Ofer Winter condemned Katz’s handling of the situation as damaging public trust. Local leaders in the West Bank, including Beit El Council head Shay Alon, criticized Katz’s decision as harmful to settlement security and called on him to reverse it. The Yesha Council expressed full support for Blot, highlighting his military leadership and cooperation with settlers.

Conversely, Knesset member Limor Son Har-Melech praised Katz’s move, accusing Blot of failing in his role by alienating settlers and allowing increased Arab terrorism. She emphasized that military officers must adhere to government policy rather than personal views. A meeting between regional leaders and Katz was scheduled for later that day to discuss the matter further.
