Eight-Year-Old Trapped by Jacuzzi Pump in Northern Israel, Rescued After Several Minutes

An eight-year-old girl vacationing with her family at a northern Israel guesthouse was trapped for several minutes by a powerful jacuzzi pump after the suction cover came loose. The incident occurred when the girl sat near an uncovered suction inlet, which her family believes was accidentally removed by another child. Despite close adult supervision, the girl became stuck and was pulled forcefully against the pump opening, causing severe pain and difficulty breathing. Her parents had to unplug the jacuzzi’s electrical supply to stop the suction and free her.

The girl was rushed to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital’s pediatric emergency department with extensive bruising covering most of her upper back, significant swelling, and acute pain. Doctors feared internal injuries, especially to her lungs, due to the vacuum’s strength and her respiratory distress. A CT scan ruled out internal organ damage, but plastic surgery specialists identified potentially irreversible skin damage that could lead to necrosis. She was treated with strong painkillers and prescribed preventive antibiotic ointment, with follow-up care scheduled.

The girl’s mother recounted the traumatic event, emphasizing that the suction cover was not secured and could be easily removed. She urged parents to thoroughly inspect jacuzzi systems before use, ensuring all suction covers are firmly in place to prevent similar accidents. The family remains shaken by the ordeal despite constant supervision during the vacation.

The hospital team included Dr. Nurit Feinstein and senior physician Dr. Deborah Friedler, who highlighted the severity of the bruising and the risk of lasting skin injury. The case underscores the dangers of unsecured jacuzzi suction fittings, especially for children, and the importance of safety awareness during recreational water activities.
