The U.S. Department of Defense has finalized one of its largest procurement contracts ever, agreeing to purchase Patriot missile interceptors from Lockheed Martin for $58.9 billion. This multi-year contract, covering production from 2026 to 2032, aims to significantly increase the United States' missile stockpile, which has been depleted due to ongoing conflicts involving Iran and Ukraine, as well as preparations for potential future confrontations with China.

Currently, Lockheed Martin produces about 600 Patriot interceptors annually, but the new contract will raise production to 2,000 missiles per year. To meet this demand, Lockheed Martin and its suppliers of rocket motors, guidance systems, and warheads will expand their manufacturing lines. Lockheed Martin plans to invest up to $9 billion by 2030 in production facilities in Alabama and Arkansas and hire over 1,000 additional workers.

The contract includes more than 10,000 missiles and is expected to reduce the unit cost to approximately $4 million each, compared to the roughly $1 million cost of Israel's equivalent David's Sling interceptor produced by Rafael. Due to prioritizing U.S. forces and Gulf allies equipped with Patriot systems, the U.S. has delayed missile deliveries to Ukraine and postponed shipments to Switzerland until 2032.

In response to missile shortages, the Pentagon also recently ordered $441 million worth of older PAC-2 Patriot missiles from Raytheon, which have not been purchased in 30 years. These missiles are less capable against ballistic missiles but effective against aircraft and drones, allowing the more advanced PAC-3 interceptors to be conserved for ballistic missile threats.

The Pentagon's push to expand production contrasts with the post-Cold War decline in U.S. defense manufacturing capacity, emphasizing increased investment in production lines over stock buybacks and shareholder returns. This strategic buildup reflects the growing missile threats from Iran and other global adversaries.
