The story · English

The Israeli Air Force officially reopened the "Defenders of the West" Squadron (193) at the Palmachim Airbase, marking its return as a naval support helicopter unit. The squadron will operate SH-60F Seahawk helicopters, tasked with maritime reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, search and rescue, and support for the Israeli Navy. The ceremony was attended by Air Force Commander Major General Amikam Norkin, Navy Commander Major General Eli Sharvit, along with commanders, soldiers, and crew members.

The squadron will work closely with the Navy's missile boat flotilla to protect Israel's strategic maritime assets, ensure freedom of navigation, assist maneuvering forces, and provide naval firepower. This reactivation strengthens operational cooperation between the Air Force and Navy and expands Israel's maritime defense capabilities. The SH-60F helicopters are equipped with advanced sensors, including maritime radar and day-night observation systems.

Originally established in 1987, the squadron previously operated Dolphin and later Bat helicopters before its closure in 2025 at Ramat David Airbase. It now resumes operations at Palmachim with a renewed focus on naval support missions. At the ceremony, Major General Norkin emphasized the squadron's nearly 40-year legacy of joint air-sea operations and highlighted the importance of partnership and shared values in defending Israel's maritime borders.

Navy Commander Major General Sharvit praised the unique bond between air and sea forces, stressing the need for integrated operations to maintain maritime superiority. Palmachim Base Commander Brigadier General Y. noted the current tense security environment and the critical role of the squadron in safeguarding Israel's maritime borders and economic waters. Squadron Commander Lieutenant Colonel B. expressed pride in continuing the squadron's heritage and readiness to face new operational challenges following recent conflicts.

The reestablishment of Squadron 193 represents a significant enhancement of Israel's naval defense posture amid evolving regional threats, reinforcing the strategic alliance between the Air Force and Navy.
