IDF Apache Helicopter Squadron Relocates to Northern Israel to Enhance Border Defense
The Israeli Air Force's 190th 'Magic Touch' Squadron, operating Apache attack helicopters, conducted a large-scale formation flight over Israel yesterday as part of its relocation from Ramon Airbase in the Negev to Ramat David Airbase in the Jezreel Valley. This move aims to improve rapid response capabilities in northern Israel following lessons learned from the October 7 attacks. During the recent conflict, Squadron 190 engaged in multiple fronts, targeting terrorist sites, eliminating militants, and providing aerial support to ground forces. They also participated in air defense missions, including intercepting unmanned aerial vehicles launched toward Israel during Operations 'With the Wolf' and 'Roar of the Lion.'
The relocation is part of a broader strategic effort to disperse combat helicopter squadrons between the north and south, enhancing the defense of Israel's borders. Air Force Commander Major General Amikam Norkin praised the squadron's efforts during the conflict, highlighting their critical role in protecting communities and saving lives despite the national tragedy. He emphasized the ongoing need for adaptation and readiness to confront threats across all arenas.
Ramat David Base Commander Brigadier General A. acknowledged the swift military review following October 7, underscoring the vital importance of combat helicopter units in border defense and support for ground troops. He commended the pilots, reservists, technical teams, and ground crews for their courage, dedication, and continuous efforts to maintain operational readiness. The squadron commander, Lieutenant Colonel A., reflected on leaving the desert environment for the greener northern terrain, affirming that while the home base changes, the squadron's values, fighting spirit, and commitment to the mission remain steadfast. The squadron has been actively engaged in ongoing combat operations since the October 7 attacks and continues to operate wherever needed.
This relocation marks a significant step in the Israeli Air Force's broader transformation and adaptation to evolving security challenges, ensuring enhanced protection for Israel's northern regions and readiness to deploy full combat power against any adversary.
