Israel Air Force Introduces Advanced SH-60F Seahawk Maritime Helicopter for Naval Operations
The Israeli Air Force has introduced the SH-60F Seahawk, a new maritime helicopter set to replace the older Bat helicopters aboard Israeli Navy ships. This helicopter, operated by the reactivated Squadron 193 "Defenders of the West," is a naval variant of the renowned Black Hawk, designed specifically for sea operations. The SH-60F is larger and more capable than its predecessors, equipped with advanced sensors and weaponry to meet the increasing complexity of naval warfare.
Maritime helicopters like the Seahawk perform critical roles that ships alone cannot fulfill. Their primary missions include reconnaissance and threat detection beyond the ship's visual and radar range, anti-submarine warfare using sonar buoys and depth charges, and direct naval combat with missiles and torpedoes. They also provide flexible firepower with door-mounted machine guns to intercept small hostile vessels.
Beyond combat, these helicopters support elite naval commando raids by deploying forces deep into enemy territory, conduct electronic warfare to disrupt enemy radar and communications, and perform vital search and rescue and logistical supply missions. Their design features include reinforced landing gear for rough ship deck landings, folding rotors and tail for compact storage, and corrosion resistance for harsh maritime environments.
Historically, Israel operated smaller maritime helicopters like the French Dolphin and the Panther (nicknamed Bat), but the SH-60F represents a significant upgrade in size, payload, and capabilities. The choice of the Seahawk aligns with Israel's acquisition policies and the larger size of its modern Sa'ar 5 and 6 corvettes, which can accommodate the bigger helicopter. This new platform enhances Israel's naval operational readiness amid growing maritime threats from regional terrorist groups investing in naval commando capabilities.
The SH-60F Seahawk is expected to serve as a versatile "flying hunter" and life-saving asset, strengthening the Israeli Navy's ability to detect, engage, and neutralize sea-based threats while supporting a broad range of maritime missions.
