Aviyaor Sasson, the primary suspect in the murder of Benyahu Razi, was arrested by police on July 28, 2026, following an extensive manhunt. Sasson had been hiding in various locations across central and northern Israel and was apprehended in a tunnel on a main road near Jerusalem. Police officers intercepted the taxi he was traveling in, subdued him, and placed him under arrest. Sasson reportedly avoided carrying a phone since the murder to prevent authorities from tracking his location. He has been transferred for interrogation and will soon appear before a judge to discuss the extension of his detention.
Earlier on the same day, a prison service officer was also arrested on suspicions of obstructing the investigation and breach of trust. Authorities suspect the officer had a romantic relationship with Sasson's stepbrother, who is currently serving a prison sentence, and allegedly assisted Sasson while he was on the run. This arrest was part of a covert investigation conducted by the police's Crime Fighting Unit and prison service investigators.
The police emphasized that the search for Sasson had been conducted with high intensity, involving operational and intelligence efforts to locate and capture him. Sasson's arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the murder of Benyahu Razi.
