New Testimonies Reveal Physical Abuse and Harassment in Bedouin Reconnaissance Battalion
New disturbing testimonies have emerged exposing severe physical violence, harassment, and theft within the Bedouin Reconnaissance Battalion 585, alongside ongoing cover-ups by senior command. The revelations include an incident where a company commander struck a female soldier in the face with a rifle butt, causing serious injury. A former officer described the event, stating the commander became angry at a female soldier and hit her with the rifle butt. Additionally, the battalion's deputy commander reportedly screamed at a female soldier until she fainted.
When the injured soldier reported the assault to the battalion commander, she was allegedly told to keep the matter internal to avoid damaging the battalion's reputation, with a threat of imprisonment if she filed a formal complaint. A former female officer also accused the battalion of harassment and theft of her credit card, claiming the commander refused to investigate and instead blamed a Jewish soldier. She described violence and abusive language as routine within the unit.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) responded by denying the accuracy of most claims, stating the alleged physical assault with a weapon did not occur. The IDF emphasized that all reported sexual misconduct cases were handled by commanders and the Yahalom unit, which supports victims. The IDF stressed zero tolerance for violations of conduct and values, noting all incidents were investigated and addressed, including disciplinary actions and dismissals when necessary.
The battalion has been active on the front lines for over two and a half years, with most soldiers volunteering. The IDF highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen command norms, deepen ethical discourse, and improve operational readiness. Support services remain available for victims within the unit.
