IDF Revitalizes Bedouin Desert Reconnaissance Battalion After Months of Crisis

The Bedouin Desert Reconnaissance Battalion (585) of the IDF, composed entirely of Bedouin soldiers, has embarked on a six-week intensive field training in the Negev desert for the first time since the October 7 attacks. This marks a concerted effort by the IDF to rehabilitate the battalion’s image and operational discipline following a seven-month period without a permanent commander, during which operational discipline collapsed and serious incidents, including involvement in smuggling into Gaza, led to the battalion’s removal from its original sector.

Lieutenant Colonel Sh', a seasoned officer with combat experience in Gaza and Judea and Samaria, was appointed to lead the battalion’s recovery. He emphasizes the importance of addressing both operational and psychological challenges, particularly tailoring mental health support to the cultural context of Bedouin soldiers. Sh' has implemented strict disciplinary measures, including dismissing personnel involved in misconduct and collaborating with military police and security agencies to enforce standards.

The battalion also faced allegations of sexual harassment, which Sh' investigated personally, concluding that the incidents were isolated disciplinary issues rather than systemic problems. He attributes much of the battalion’s prior difficulties to the prolonged absence of stable leadership, comparing the unit to a ship without a captain.

Beyond internal reforms, the battalion confronts broader societal challenges tied to the Bedouin community’s complex relationship with the state, including housing demolitions and employment difficulties for discharged soldiers. To address these, the IDF has launched support programs assisting soldiers with legal and employment issues, contributing to a significant increase in recruitment numbers, from an average of 20 recruits per cycle in the past decade to 75 in the upcoming cycle, many coming from a newly established pre-military preparatory program.

Soldiers express mixed feelings of frustration over enduring stereotypes and cautious optimism about the changes. Female social welfare officers serving in the battalion report a supportive environment and active engagement in helping soldiers with personal and financial challenges. The coming months will be critical to determine if these reforms can sustain long-term transformation and build a strong Bedouin leadership cadre within the IDF.
