IDF Bedouin Reconnaissance Battalion Linked to Major Smuggling Ring into Gaza

The Israeli military has lifted the gag order on one of the most serious smuggling scandals uncovered since the start of the war, centering on the Bedouin Reconnaissance Battalion 585. According to details published by i24, eight soldiers from various command levels within the battalion are accused of multiple smuggling offenses involving goods into the Gaza Strip. These incidents are separate but related, with many involved unaware that others in the battalion were conducting similar operations. Investigations reveal the smuggling became a highly profitable enterprise, with soldiers reportedly receiving 1,000 shekels in cash per cigarette smuggled into Gaza. In another case, a whole motorcycle was smuggled. Overall, the accused are said to have pocketed tens of millions of shekels.

The scandal emerged from a broader smuggling network active since February 2025, involving Palestinians from Judea and Samaria, Gaza traders, Egyptian civilians, and soldiers from the battalion. Initially, food products were smuggled, but later the network expanded to include prohibited and dual-use items such as solar panels, car batteries, tobacco, electric bicycles, cell phones, vehicle parts, gas cylinders, and other goods. One notable transaction involved 20,000 steel balls used for horse horseshoes, purchased for 27,000 shekels, sold for 37,000 shekels, and then valued at nearly 2 million shekels inside Gaza.

The indictment mentions one participant feared exposure, but his Gaza partner reassured him, citing his son’s service in the battalion to facilitate border transfers. The smuggling attempt was thwarted, and the suspect was arrested shortly after. The IDF spokesperson condemned the smuggling, emphasizing the security risks and the involvement of active-duty and reserve soldiers. The military police, prosecution, and security agencies are continuing investigations and prosecutions. Following these events, Battalion 585 is undergoing a comprehensive strengthening process, including reinforcing command norms, deepening ethical discourse, and enhancing operational readiness across all ranks.
