After a 12-year absence from European football, Hapoel Tel Aviv marked their return with a significant 2-0 victory against Bulgarian champions Ludogorets in the Conference League qualifiers. The match took place on Thursday at Hapoel's temporary home stadium in Hungary. This win follows a season highlighted by their first Tel Aviv derby victory in 12 years and a fourth-place league finish, which secured their European spot.
Hapoel Tel Aviv overcame a challenging period marked by ownership changes, relegations to the second division, and financial difficulties. Their recent form includes a win in their official season opener against rivals Beitar Jerusalem via a penalty shootout. In the European match, Omri Altman scored just before halftime, and defender Chico sealed the win with a goal in the 88th minute.
Ludogorets, who ended their 14-year consecutive championship streak last season, appeared weak in the match. Hapoel's two-goal advantage could be decisive ahead of the return leg in Bulgaria next week. The winner will advance to the third qualifying round, facing the victor between Katowice and Žilina. Fans hope this marks the beginning of a historic European campaign for Hapoel Tel Aviv once again.
