After a 12-year absence from European football, Hapoel Tel Aviv marked their return with a 2-0 victory against Bulgarian powerhouse Ludogorets on July 23, 2026, in front of 5,000 passionate fans in Hungary. The team, coached by Aliniv Breda, secured the win with goals from Omri Altman in the 45th minute and Chico in the 90th, giving them a significant advantage ahead of the second leg in Bulgaria.

Despite Ludogorets being the favorites due to their experienced squad and a market value difference of 32.66 million euros, Hapoel Tel Aviv managed to overcome the odds. The Israeli side faced challenges including a weakened squad after the departure of Luzio Louizo and the loss of home advantage, as the match was held away from their Bloomfield Stadium.

The match in Miskolc was initially cautious, with few dangerous chances and a brief stoppage due to heavy smoke from flares in the stands. Hapoel’s defense successfully contained Ludogorets’ attacks, with goalkeeper Asaf Tzur well protected and Lucas Palkao controlling the midfield. The first goal came just before halftime from a free kick by Stav Turyel, assisted by Emmanuel Boateng, leading to Altman’s header.

In the second half, Hapoel nearly doubled their lead with a header from Daniel Dappa hitting the post in the 81st minute. The final goal came in stoppage time when Chico scored from close range after a rebound off the crossbar. This victory sets up a tense return leg in Bulgaria, with Hapoel aiming to advance further in European competition.

The win is seen as a crucial step for Hapoel Tel Aviv’s foreign players, who must now prove their ability to elevate the team professionally beyond just fitting into the club’s culture.
