New Book Preserves Rabbi Aryeh Stern’s Unique Teachings on Ramban’s Commentaries
A new book titled 'Conversations Following Ramban’s Commentaries' compiles for the first time the lessons delivered by Rabbi Aryeh Stern over 35 years at the Kerem B'Yavneh Yeshiva. The book aims to preserve Rabbi Stern’s distinctive approach to Torah study and student development, based on summaries from lessons taught during the Jewish years 5784-5785 (2023-2025). The editors emphasize their effort to maintain the original sequence and language of the lessons, which begin with Parashat Ki Tetze and continue through the yeshiva’s cycles until the last lesson in Menachem Av 5785.
In addition to the lesson transcripts, the book includes a comprehensive chapter summarizing Rabbi Stern’s educational philosophy, drawn from thousands of lessons. The editors sought to capture not only the content but also the methodology and spirit of his teaching. Rabbi Stern’s final lesson, delivered during the book’s editing, encapsulates his core educational principles, which the editors preserved to ensure their lasting impact.
Central to Rabbi Stern’s approach is the balance between depth and clarity. He explained that a teacher must provide both "noy" (beauty or elegance) and "romemut" (elevation or loftiness) in every lesson, ensuring it is both profound and accessible. He stressed the importance of clear understanding, warning that lessons are ineffective if students do not grasp the material. His teaching motto is that learning should combine understanding, elevation, and beauty, resulting in joy.
The book also highlights Rabbi Stern’s view of the educator’s role beyond teaching, including personal care for students. It recounts his encounter with Rabbi Neriah, who defined a teacher’s role as "lifting and elevating" students, cautioning against deception. Personal anecdotes illustrate Rabbi Stern’s sensitivity, such as a story where he apologized to a student he unintentionally overlooked due to deep lesson preparation. The book concludes with the blessing Rabbi Stern traditionally gave at the end of his lessons: "Abundant blessing and success."
