Rabbi M. Sternbuch Calls for Expanding Torah Study Amid Challenges in Israel

Rabbi M. Sternbuch has initiated a broad campaign to expand Torah study centers across Israel in response to recent economic pressures on the Haredi Torah world. Following his historic decision addressing the community's reaction to restrictions on Torah study, Rabbi Sternbuch urges leaders of kollels (Torah study institutions) to increase the number of learners and seating, especially in rapidly growing areas like Beit Shemesh where demand exceeds supply.

Rabbi Sternbuch highlighted the severe impact of recent economic decrees, including the cancellation of recognition under Section 46, which forced many kollels to reduce their enrollment or close. This has left many avreichim (Torah scholars) without study places, prompting Rabbi Sternbuch to declare, "How can one sleep at night in such a situation? The Torah is being degraded, and God is crying out, 'Awaken, awaken!'"

To lead by example, Rabbi Sternbuch is expanding his own network of kollels, "Teshuvot VeHanhagot," and calls on other kollel heads to follow suit. Recognizing the financial strain on kollels, he launched the "Alaf HaMagen" fundraising campaign, seeking 1,000 supporters to each contribute 3,000 shekels (approximately $1,000). He emphasized, "Everyone should support with all their strength, even if it seems like a loss, but with God's help, there will be great profit. Whoever donates a thousand dollars will see salvation."

This initiative reflects a strategic shift from defensive contraction to proactive expansion in the face of governmental pressures, aiming to preserve and strengthen Torah study in Israel. Rabbi Sternbuch has also appointed three new kollel heads in Beit Shemesh to accommodate growth. The campaign invites public participation to ensure the survival and flourishing of Torah learning during challenging times.
