Teenager Hospitalized After Bat Incident in Home Air Conditioner Near Haifa

A 15-year-old boy was urgently admitted to the pediatric emergency department at Rambam Medical Center near Haifa after encountering a bat inside his home air conditioner. The incident began when the boy heard strange noises coming from the air conditioner and discovered a small bat hiding inside. While attempting to free the bat, the boy felt that the bat's secretions fell onto his face and entered his mouth. At the same time, the family cat noticed the bat and caught it. Recognizing the potential health risk, the boy sought immediate medical evaluation at Rambam.

Riyad Sheikh, head nurse of the pediatric emergency department at Rambam, explained that according to Israeli Ministry of Health guidelines, any contact with a bat requires serious medical attention due to the risk of rabies transmission. Even without visible wounds or direct bites, bats are considered immediate suspects for carrying the disease, necessitating preventive treatment. The boy received rabies prophylaxis and was discharged in good condition, with a recommendation to provide similar treatment to the family cat.

This unusual event highlights the importance of prompt medical response following any bat exposure to prevent rabies infection, a potentially fatal disease. The hospital and health authorities emphasize not taking any risks in such cases.
