Teen Receives Rabies Treatment After Bat Exposure in Haifa Home

A 15-year-old boy from the Haifa area was treated at Rambam Medical Center's pediatric emergency department after exposure to a bat that had entered his home and hidden in the air conditioner. The boy heard noises from the air conditioner, approached to investigate, and during an attempt to free the bat, he came into contact with bat secretions that touched his face and entered his mouth. The family cat also noticed the bat and jumped toward it. Recognizing the potential rabies risk, the boy sought medical care following Ministry of Health guidelines. Riyad Sheikh, the nurse in charge at Rambam's pediatric emergency, emphasized that any contact with bats requires serious medical attention and preventive rabies treatment, even without visible injury. The boy received preventive treatment and was discharged in good condition, with recommendations to similarly treat the family cat.
