Tens of Thousands Flock to Safed for Annual Arizal Pilgrimage Amid Nationwide Events

The story · English

Thousands of Jewish worshippers from across Israel are currently converging on the holy city of Safed to mark the annual yahrzeit (death anniversary) of the Arizal, Rabbi Isaac Luria, a central figure in Jewish mysticism. The influx began Saturday night as the Sabbath ended, with large crowds visiting his grave in the ancient cemetery. Among the attendees were prominent rabbis, including Rabbi Reuven Elbaz, a member of the Council of Torah Sages. Security and transportation services have been significantly increased to accommodate the expected tens of thousands throughout the day.

In other news from Bnei Brak, a municipal building was broken into overnight, marking the second such incident within a week. Police have launched an investigation after suspects reportedly accessed the second and third floors, including the office of the city manager’s advisor. Meanwhile, a seven-year-old boy was moderately injured after being hit by a car in Bnei Brak and was hospitalized.

The Israeli Tax Authority announced a freeze on processing war damage compensation claims from Bnei Brak residents following an incident where tax inspectors were attacked. The freeze will remain until the city issues a public condemnation of the event. Additionally, the Knesset approved the Eichler Voice Messaging Law, which mandates that government agencies send voice messages to kosher phone users who cannot receive SMS, a move welcomed by religious communities.

Other highlights include a podcast preparing listeners for the fast of Tisha B’Av, discussions on intra-community tensions within the ultra-Orthodox sector, and political developments such as the Knesset’s approval of election funding and the official scheduling of the upcoming elections. Internationally, Eric Trump met with the Chief Rabbi of Baku to discuss Israel-Azerbaijan relations.

The article also references various social and security issues affecting the ultra-Orthodox community, including a tragic death of a toddler in Baltimore, a serious assault in a Lithuanian yeshiva, and ongoing tensions in educational institutions. The report concludes with a note on religious rulings permitting Ashkenazi Jews to shower and listen to music during the nine days preceding Tisha B’Av.
