Early Arrival of Orphean Warbler Signals Start of Autumn Bird Migration in Israel

While most are still adjusting to summer, the autumn bird migration has already begun for some species in Israel. On Wednesday, researchers at the Jerusalem Bird Observatory's Ariel Hut, operated by the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI), recorded the first signs of the autumn migration season. During a long-term bird banding study, 21 birds were captured, including 11 Orphean Warblers (Sylvia hortensis), one of the earliest songbird species to appear in Israel on their southward journey to Africa.

Yotam Bashan, a senior ornithologist and station manager at SPNI, explained that the Orphean Warbler is among the largest warblers in Israel, named after the legendary Greek musician Orpheus due to its strong beak and rich song. The capture of these early migrants is considered one of the most exciting moments each season, marking the start of a spectacular natural phenomenon involving millions of birds migrating from Eurasia to Africa.
