Half a Million White Storks Begin Autumn Migration Across Israel to Africa

The autumn migration of one of the largest and most impressive birds, the white stork, has commenced. Over the next two months, approximately half a million white storks will cross Israeli skies as they journey south to Africa. On Monday afternoon, Dr. Yoav Perlman, director of the Bird Center at the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, observed the first flock of about 60 white storks resting and drinking at the Hula reservoir in central Israel amid the day's heat. Dr. Perlman explained that these storks originate from breeding areas in central and eastern Europe and will continue their migration to wintering sites across Africa, reaching as far south as South Africa.
