Migratory Birds Begin Arriving at Hula Valley Nature Reserve as Autumn Approaches

Despite the summer heat, the first migratory birds of the autumn season have started arriving at Israel's Hula Valley Nature Reserve. These birds time their migration based on daylight length, signaling the end of nesting and the start of energy accumulation for their journey. Early arrivals include sandpipers and songbirds, with sightings of egrets, stilts, and the first eight flamingos reported over the weekend. The reserve also hosts migrating butterflies, such as the Danaus chrysippus, adding to the vibrant ecosystem.

Inbar Shlomit Rubin, the site manager at the Hula Valley for the Jewish National Fund, described the season as fascinating, with nesting birds still caring for their young while new arrivals appear daily. She noted that in August, the first storks will begin their migration through the area. The Hula Valley is a crucial habitat and stopover along the bird migration route, offering abundant food and a safe resting place for various species.

The ongoing arrival of migratory birds highlights the ecological importance of the Hula Valley as a biodiversity hotspot and a key site for conservation efforts in Israel.
