Thousands of White Storks Begin Autumn Migration Through Israel's Arava Desert

The autumn migration of white storks has commenced, with flocks of thousands already observed in the central Arava region of Israel. These birds are traveling from Europe to warmer African countries where they will spend the winter months. During their journey across the African deserts, the storks stop at key resting points in the central Arava to rest, drink water, and feed.

Ady Matmon, a senior tour guide from Ein Yahav, and his wife Dalia documented the storks during a flight over the central Arava. Ady explained that the storks migrate hundreds of kilometers daily and choose the central Arava as a reliable refuge to recuperate from their long journey. He noted their remarkable navigation skills, allowing them to return to the same locations year after year.

Each autumn, over 600,000 white storks pass over Israel. The adult storks are characterized by their distinctive white and black plumage, while the younger birds, hatched in spring and newly fledged, have darker coloring. White storks are large birds, approximately 100 cm in body length, with wingspans up to 180 cm and weighing between 2.5 and 4.5 kilograms.
