US Launches Fifth Night of Strikes on Iran Amid Rising Tensions and Threats

The US military announced on Wednesday night that it had initiated a fifth consecutive night of airstrikes against Iran, targeting the country's military capabilities to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Explosions were reported in the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, as well as in Ahvaz in the southwest and Chabahar in the southeast. Shortly after the US announcement, Iran responded with alarms sounding in Bahrain. Iranian propaganda released a video titled "Where to Kill Trump?" detailing the US president's security arrangements.

President Donald Trump threatened to strike Iranian power plants and bridges if Iran did not come to the negotiating table. He also claimed Iran had reached out to initiate talks, stating in a Fox News interview, "Iran wants to meet," and expressing hope for a deal. At a Pennsylvania rally, Trump declared, "Iran will be defeated very soon."

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf described the situation as an "existential war" with the US, emphasizing readiness to fight to the death to protect national interests but also advocating for diplomacy and negotiation. Ghalibaf is seen as a pragmatic figure within Iran's leadership, contrasting with more hardline factions.

Reuters reported that the recent US strikes serve as preparatory actions to degrade Iran's defenses in case of a future escalation. A US official described the strikes as "preparatory operations" to enable more intense military actions if ordered. Trump has also threatened to seize Kharg Island, Iran's main oil export terminal, a move fraught with risk due to potential Iranian missile and drone attacks.

The Wall Street Journal revealed that Trump is inclined toward escalating military operations but has not made a final decision. Discussions at the White House Situation Room included options for ground invasions of Kharg Island or other areas near the Strait of Hormuz and potential strikes on Iran's secret nuclear facility near Natanz. Energy infrastructure attacks remain a possible option but are considered a last resort.

Despite the escalation, Trump has renewed the blockade of Iranian ports and sought options to compel Iran to cease attacks on commercial vessels. Vice President Mike Pence indicated in a Joe Rogan podcast that the military actions aim to pressure Iran back to negotiations rather than continuous bombing. Several senior officials, including Defense Secretary Mark Esper and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have been involved in recent deliberations with Trump on these matters.
