The story · English

DP World, the Dubai-based port operator, is advancing plans to build a multipurpose port and container terminal in Fujairah on the eastern coast of the United Arab Emirates. The initiative aims to reduce Dubai's reliance on the Jebel Ali port and the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a hotspot of tension between the US and Iran. According to the Financial Times, the new port will enable container unloading on the Gulf of Oman side, with overland transport to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and other Gulf countries.

This development comes amid a sharp decline in activity at Jebel Ali port due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Industry sources suggest the overland route could serve as an economic safeguard if maritime traffic in the region is blocked or compromised. While DP World has not officially confirmed project details, the company is reportedly in talks with government officials. Construction is expected to take about 18 months if approved.
