Google Integrates Gemini AI Into Waze to Enhance Navigation and Reporting
Google has integrated its AI assistant Gemini into the Waze navigation app to simplify destination searches and road hazard reporting for drivers. Initially, Gemini will be incorporated into two main Waze features. The first allows users to search for destinations using conversational voice commands such as "find a coffee shop open now," "find parking near the mall," or "find the closest gas station with the lowest prices." Waze will respond with a list of options, and users can start navigation with an additional voice command.
The second feature enables drivers to report road hazards and suggest map corrections, like blocked roads or incorrect house numbers, through voice commands similar to chatting with a chatbot. According to Guy Barkovitz, Waze's head of operations at Google, simply saying "road blocked ahead" will send details to local map editors who will verify and update the map accordingly.
Additional updates include route suggestions based on users' previous trips and local traffic patterns, allowing preferences such as favoring highways over streets with frequent stops. Users can also opt for alternative routes or disable personalized suggestions. For those bothered by frequent voice updates, a "less talkative" mode will reduce notifications to critical alerts like major hazards, expected turns, and lane changes.
Another new feature is a motorcycle navigation mode, recognizing that motorcycles require different routes than cars due to their ability to use narrower streets and sensitivity to road conditions. This AI-powered mode highlights relevant hazards such as potholes, speed bumps, raised sidewalks, ending shoulders, and narrow bridges. The motorcycle mode is launching in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines.
These updates will roll out to all Waze users in the coming days, aiming to improve the driving experience with smarter, voice-driven assistance and tailored navigation options.
