Google Begins Phasing Out Google Assistant in Favor of AI Gemini

Google is initiating a major transition by replacing its long-standing voice assistant, Google Assistant, with a new artificial intelligence system called Gemini. This shift will alter how users interact with their phones and smart devices. For years, Google Assistant has enabled users to perform daily tasks through voice commands, such as setting timers, checking weather, sending messages, and more. Starting September 4, Google will gradually discontinue Google Assistant across various devices including smartphones, tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones, and Android Auto systems linked to phones. Once the transition is complete, users on affected devices will no longer be able to use the old Google Assistant.

However, in cars equipped with built-in Google systems, the old assistant will continue to operate for now. Google plans to expand Gemini’s presence to additional home devices like Google TV, smart speakers, and Google Home displays, though no final timeline has been announced for these updates. The transition to Gemini was originally scheduled earlier but was postponed to allow users more time to adjust. Currently, some users can temporarily revert to Google Assistant via the Gemini app, but this option will disappear once the migration is finalized.
