Israel's Attorney General Office Emerges as a Powerful Force in Government Affairs

The Attorney General's Office in Israel has evolved into one of the country's most influential institutions, significantly shaping government operations, appointments, and decision-making processes. Originally intended to provide legal advice to the government, the office now effectively determines which policies advance and which are halted.

This transformation is exemplified by the tenure of Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, whose appointment and background have intensified conflicts with the government, particularly regarding the ongoing judicial reform. Her relationship with Justice Minister Yariv Levin has been notably strained, including her refusal to hold direct working meetings with him. Baharav-Miara's statement that "there is no effective protest without disruption of public order" influenced law enforcement policies during protests, drawing criticism from police officials who argued it hindered their ability to manage public disturbances.

Legal expert Yiska Bina described the Attorney General as a civil servant wielding more power than the Supreme Court judges, the Prime Minister, and even the electorate. National Digital Minister Dudi Amsalem noted that the Attorney General has become widely known, often negatively, unlike previous holders of the position. Lawyer David Peter added that even critics outside the political right sharply question her professional capabilities. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir accused Baharav-Miara of supporting lawbreakers.
