BigMe Launches Hibreak Dual 2 Smartphone Combining Color E-Ink and LCD Screens

Chinese company BigMe has introduced its new smartphone model, the Hibreak Dual 2, through a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter starting July 10. The device features an unusual dual-screen design with a 6.13-inch color E-Ink front display aimed at reducing digital eye strain, alongside a 5-inch LCD screen on the back for notifications, media control, and app navigation without activating the main screen.

The front E-Ink screen supports up to 80 frames per second, a notable refresh rate for electronic ink technology, designed to bridge the gap between traditional paper-like reading and dynamic daily use. The rear LCD screen is a significant upgrade from the previous generation, offering a more complete user interface.

Powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor, the Hibreak Dual 2 includes 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, Android 16 with full Google Play access, dual 5G support, NFC, and facial recognition. However, BigMe has yet to disclose key details such as battery capacity, camera specifications, device weight, and the E-Ink screen resolution. The integration experience between the two screens, a known challenge for dual-display devices, has also not been fully demonstrated.

The campaign offers the phone starting at approximately $599 with early-bird discounts. If funded successfully, the Hibreak Dual 2 could represent an innovative attempt to merge modern smartphone capabilities with a more eye-friendly reading experience. The main question remains whether users will embrace this hybrid approach or see it as a passing novelty.
