Samsung Launches Compact Galaxy Z Fold 8 with Enhanced Screen and Battery
Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 8, marking a bold redesign in its foldable smartphone lineup. The device features a new 5.5-inch cover screen with a 3:4 aspect ratio, creating a pocket-sized "notebook" feel that enhances usability and encourages more frequent unfolding. When opened, the main 7.6-inch screen is optimized for social media videos, gaming, and reading, offering a fresh user experience.
Weighing just 201 grams, the Fold 8 is easy to hold and fits comfortably in pockets. Samsung has incorporated a pioneering 4,800mAh lithium-carbon battery, significantly extending usage time to about two days on a single charge. The phone also boasts the brightest AMOLED displays Samsung has ever produced for a smartphone, reaching 3,000 nits, which ensures clear visibility even in bright outdoor conditions.
Key technical improvements include a reinforced foldable screen with two ultra-thin titanium layers that reduce the visibility of the central crease, and an IP48 rating for water resistance against brief submersion. Compared to the Fold 8 Ultra, the standard Fold 8 has two 50-megapixel main cameras without telephoto zoom, likely to keep costs down, but still delivers sharp and vibrant photos.
Both Fold 8 models run on the advanced Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Elite processor, providing fast performance. Samsung’s One UI 9 interface offers refinements but does not radically change the user experience. Some apps are optimized for the foldable format, enhancing multitasking with side-by-side app use, though others still show design glitches. The selfie camera cutout on the inner screen can occasionally obstruct content.
New AI-powered software features include My FanCam, which allows automatic video cropping to follow a selected subject, and the upcoming Gemini Intelligence voice assistant, designed to handle complex tasks like restaurant reservations and ride bookings, though Hebrew support may take time. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at approximately 6,000 shekels and is positioned as a mature, innovative foldable phone that revitalizes Samsung’s foldable series.
