Givat Ze'ev Officially Declared a City in West Bank, Marking Historic Milestone

Givat Ze'ev, a settlement in the West Bank, was officially declared a city after Central Command Chief Major General Avi Blot signed the order completing its status change from a local council to a municipality. This follows an earlier signature by Israel Ozen, Director General of the Interior Ministry, who is currently acting as Interior Minister. The formal recognition took place after weeks of waiting and marks the first new city declaration in Judea and Samaria since 1996, making Givat Ze'ev the fifth city in the region.

Currently, about 25,000 residents are registered in Givat Ze'ev, with an actual population nearing 35,000, making it one of Israel's fastest-growing communities. The change in status is expected to enhance municipal services, promote development, and maintain the community's unique character. Mayor Yossi Assraf described the moment as a "historic milestone" and a significant boost for settlement growth around Jerusalem.

Finance Minister and Defense Ministry official Bezalel Smotrich emphasized that the declaration aligns with a broader policy to strengthen settlements amid political challenges. Local residents expressed excitement and pride over the recognition, viewing it as a major advancement for their community.

Celebrations marking the transition from local council to city are planned for Sunday, the 12th of Av, at the Gai Park complex in Givat Ze'ev, with thousands of residents and guests expected to attend.
