Givat Ze'ev Officially Declared a City in Israel After Population Growth
Givat Ze'ev was officially declared a city in Israel following the final signature of the Central Command chief, completing its status upgrade from a local council to a municipality. The announcement came after a thorough review by the Ministry of Interior and the Geographic Committee, which assessed the settlement's current data and future development plans.
Currently, Givat Ze'ev officially has about 25,000 residents, though nearly 35,000 people actually live there. The settlement is noted for one of the highest growth rates in Israel. The status change aims to align the municipal framework with the planned development scope, enabling the local authority to expand services and better manage ongoing growth.
Mayor Yossi Asraf welcomed the decision, calling it a historic moment and a significant boost for settlement in the Jerusalem envelope area. He emphasized that becoming a city will drive growth and improve residents' quality of life. Asraf also highlighted that the new status will enhance the municipality's ability to provide high-level services, lead development processes, and handle growth challenges while preserving the community's warm, village-like atmosphere.
He expressed gratitude to the Central Command chief and all professionals involved in the comprehensive work and pledged to continue advancing the city for the benefit of its residents.
