Israeli Airline Arkia Makes Historic Landing at Arctic's Northernmost Airport

The story · English

Arkia Airlines made history this week by becoming the first Israeli airline to land at Longyearbyen Airport, the northernmost airport in the world, located in the Svalbard archipelago about 1,300 kilometers from the North Pole. This milestone marks the first time an Israeli-registered aircraft has reached this inhabited Arctic location, placing Israel among a select group of countries operating direct flights to this extreme destination.

The special flights were conducted using an Airbus A320 in cooperation with Spirit Productions and nature photographer Roy Glitz. The journey included a refueling stop in Helsinki before continuing north to Longyearbyen, an area known for its extreme cold, massive glaciers, Arctic wildlife including polar bears, and nearly continuous daylight during summer months.

Svalbard is a unique tourist destination with limited flights due to its remote location and harsh conditions, requiring complex logistical and operational preparations. Arkia completed four successful special flights, demonstrating the capability of Israeli aviation to operate in challenging and distant regions previously outside its typical flight map.

This achievement not only has symbolic significance but also showcases the expanding operational reach of Israeli airlines to remote global destinations.
