Madonna Confronts Stepmother and Ex Sean Penn in New Album Confessions II

The story · English

Madonna is addressing personal grievances with her stepmother Joan Ciccone and ex-husband Sean Penn in her upcoming album Confessions II, set for release on July 3, 2026. At 67, the singer uses her music to express long-held anger and unresolved issues from her past. Madonna lost her mother to cancer at age five, after which her father Silvio married their housekeeper Joan, who became Madonna's stepmother. Their strained relationship is explored in the song "Betrayal," where Madonna accuses Joan of betrayal and states, "You’ll never take my mother’s place." Joan passed away in 2024, and Madonna did not attend her funeral.

Madonna also confronts Sean Penn, to whom she was married from 1985 to 1989, in the track "Bizarre." She references him as a "blue-eyed movie star" who was intimidated by her fame and unwilling to "share the red carpet." The song alludes to the 1968 Shelby GT500 convertible she gifted him and his reckless driving conviction in 1987. Despite their turbulent relationship, Madonna previously expressed affection for Penn, notably praising his humanitarian work in Haiti in 2016. However, in "Bizarre," she sings about the complexities and bitterness of their love, acknowledging lingering resentment and secrets.

The album release has sparked media attention for its candid and personal content, revealing Madonna’s willingness to publicly address difficult family and romantic relationships through her art. Confessions II will be fully available starting Friday, July 3, 2026.
