Crystal Palace conceded an early goal against Hoffenheim, with Israeli defender Anan Khalaili facing criticism for his role in the defensive lapse. The error occurred just seven minutes into the match at Selhurst Park on Thursday, when a mistake by goalkeeper Dean Henderson allowed Hoffenheim to take a 1-0 lead. Khalaili had returned to the starting lineup after being on the bench for the League Cup win and appearing as a substitute in the league loss to Tottenham.

Sky Sports described the opening as "a nightmare start," noting that Henderson could have prevented the goal and that the ball went under him on Hoffenheim's first shot. The outlet commented that it was "too easy" to play against Palace.

Fans also expressed frustration, with one noting a sense of "déjà vu" regarding Khalaili being out of position. The criticism highlighted that Khalaili, playing as a wing-back in a three-man defense, needs to contribute to the attack while also being prepared to quickly react to counter-attacks. The sentiment from fans was that he needs to remember his defensive responsibilities and questioned his readiness.
