Crystal Palace conceded an early goal against Hoffenheim due to a defensive mistake involving Israeli defender Anan Khalaili. In the fifth minute of the match at Selhurst Park, a misjudgment by goalkeeper Dean Henderson, following an error by Khalaili, allowed Hoffenheim to take a 1-0 lead. Khalaili had returned to the starting lineup after being on the bench for the League Cup win and appearing as a substitute in the league loss to Tottenham.

British media outlets and fans were critical of the defensive performance. Sky Sports described the opening as "a nightmare start," noting that the goal was "too easy" against Palace. Supporters expressed frustration, with one fan commenting on Khalaili's positioning, "Khalaili out of position again? This is déjà vu." Another fan questioned his readiness, stating, "He needs to remember he's a defender. How is he never ready?"

Khalaili plays as a wing-back in a three-man defense, a role that requires him to contribute to the attack while also being prepared to quickly track back during counter-attacks. The team's inability to react swiftly to the transition was a key point of criticism.
