IDF and Shin Bet Eliminate Senior Hamas Commander Responsible for Hostage

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet announced on Sunday the successful elimination of Jamal Abu Said, identified as the head of the operational department of Hamas's military wing. The targeted strike occurred in Gaza City. According to the IDF, Abu Said was responsible for holding Omer Shem-Tov, who was abducted on October 7, during the recent conflict. Over the years, Abu Said held several significant positions within Hamas, including preparing militants outside Gaza, commanding an anti-tank battalion, and overseeing military specialization for the Hamas Central Camps Brigade, which encompasses the refugee camps of Nuseirat, Bureij, Maghazi, and Deir al-Balah. He also managed Hamas's international relations and was considered a key source of expertise for the organization. The IDF stated that Abu Said had been actively advancing plans for terrorist attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians, particularly in recent times, and was working to restore Hamas's capabilities while repeatedly violating ceasefire agreements. The airstrike was carried out to neutralize the threat he posed.
