Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, Israel, has successfully performed a lung transplant using the Da Vinci robotic system, a procedure that avoids opening the patient's chest cavity. This innovative technique, which involves small incisions rather than a full sternotomy, has been performed only about 20 times globally since its inception three years ago in Spain. The robotic approach allows surgeons to connect the new lung to the patient's blood vessels and airways with greater precision.

Dr. Yuri Weissman, Director of Thoracic Surgery at Beilinson, described the procedure as a "turning point" for lung transplants in Israel, moving away from the traditional method that causes significant pain and complications. He expressed hope that robotic surgery without chest opening will become the standard within five years, citing the robot's precision and the minimal invasiveness.

The hospital also conducted a preparatory procedure a month prior to the robotic transplant, utilizing two small incisions. This preliminary step helped improve post-operative pain management, preserve muscles and nerves, and facilitate the patient's ability to breathe and cough effectively, thereby reducing the risk of pneumonia and other complications.

Dr. Shai Vain, Director of Anesthesia and Operating Rooms, highlighted the meticulous planning and preparation required for robotic surgery, noting the limited direct access to the patient. The team simulated the procedure extensively, including pre-connecting the patient to a heart-lung machine for immediate intervention if needed.

Dr. Osnat Levne-Streichman, Director of the Institute of Pulmonology and Allergy, expressed pride in Beilinson's position at the forefront of this innovation in Israel, building on their experience with over a thousand lung transplants. Dr. Dan Gurvitz, Director of the Intensive Care Unit for Heart and Chest Surgery, stated that a key benefit was the significant reduction in post-operative pain, with the patient requiring minimal analgesics and experiencing a shorter ICU stay than expected.
