Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem has conducted Israel's first spinal surgery using an advanced AI-integrated robot called Stealth Axis. The patient, 18-year-old Shani, who suffered from severe scoliosis, is recovering well and can now walk upright. The complex, over-five-hour surgery was led by Prof. Josh Schroeder, who noted the robot's significant assistance and the excellent post-operative condition of the patient. The hospital plans further surgeries with the robot, expecting it to improve treatment for complex spinal issues.

Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem in Jerusalem has successfully performed Israel's first complex spinal surgery utilizing an innovative robot integrated with artificial intelligence capabilities. The initial patient to undergo the procedure was 18-year-old Shani from Ofakim, who had suffered from severe scoliosis for years. Following the surgery, she is already able to stand upright and walk, and was discharged less than a week after the operation.

The new robotic system, named Stealth Axis, is an advanced platform for spinal surgeries that combines AI, surgical planning, and precise navigation. According to the hospital, this system has been used only a few times globally before its implementation in Israel. The technology allows surgeons to access spinal areas with a wider range of motion and greater accuracy compared to previous robotic generations.

Prior to the surgery, a specialized team from Hadassah, led by Prof. Josh Schroeder, Director of the Spine Surgery Unit, underwent practical training in Switzerland. They practiced using the robot in simulated operating room conditions. Shani was diagnosed with scoliosis about seven years ago, which affected her daily life, including her participation in dance classes.

After conservative treatments and monitoring, the decision was made for surgery when she reached the appropriate age. Her mother expressed initial apprehension about the novel robotic procedure but was reassured by the team's training and the potential for a shorter surgery. The operation, which lasted over five hours, was performed by Prof. Schroeder and his medical team.

"The surgery was complex and lengthy, over five hours during which we operated on Shani's back with the help of the robot, which greatly assisted us in the procedure," said Prof. Schroeder. "It was very exciting to use it for the first time, and it allowed for a smooth procedure without complications. Shani's condition after the surgery is excellent."

Shani is currently recovering and undergoing physical therapy, able to stand and walk slowly with an upright posture. She will continue to receive follow-up care at a Hadassah clinic near her home. Prof. Schroeder indicated that another surgery using the robot is planned soon, anticipating that the technology will enhance surgical planning and provide medical teams with more precise tools for treating complex spinal conditions.
