British pop star Boy George visited the Western Wall in Jerusalem on Monday, his third day in Israel. The singer, who is in the country for two upcoming concerts in Tel Aviv, placed a note between the stones and spoke about his family.
"As I stand here at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, I think of my mother, who would have so wanted to be here, my father, and all the people close to my heart," George said. His mother, Dana O'Dowd, passed away in 2023 at age 84. He previously spoke of their special bond and her encouragement of his creativity and self-expression.
George added, "There are places where you can feel the presence of the people you love, wherever they are. This is one of them. A moment of gratitude, reflection, love, and prayer. I wish us all peace." He was accompanied by Sylvain Adams, President of the World Jewish Congress in Israel, who invited him to the country.
Adams stated, "Boy George and I stood together today at the Western Wall and prayed for the peace of Israel, our neighbors, and the whole world." He also addressed calls for boycotts against Israel, saying, "Pressure is being put on artists to boycott us and turn their backs on our people. George chose to come, to perform for his Israeli fans, and to support Nova survivors and bereaved families. He demonstrated courage and true friendship."
Boy George's first performance at the Menora Mivtachim Arena is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, with special guest Ivri Lider. The following day, he will visit the memorial site for the Nova festival in Re'im and hold a press conference. On Saturday, November 7, he will perform another concert at the arena dedicated to the Nova community and their families, with DJ Ofer Nissim. As part of this initiative, 1,500 tickets were donated to festival survivors and bereaved families by Adams, the Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem, and Live Nation Israel.
Boy George's public support for Israel has drawn sharp criticism in recent months. After visiting a Nova commemoration exhibition in London, he released the song "We Will Dance Again." He has since spoken of threats, canceled collaborations, and severed ties due to his stance. Despite the pressures, the singer proceeded with his plans to visit Israel, and now, between his Jerusalem visit and Tel Aviv concerts, he will also visit the site that inspired his song.
