British pop star Boy George visited the Western Wall in Jerusalem on Monday, accompanied by Sylvain Adams, President of the World Jewish Congress in Israel. The two offered prayers for peace and the singer placed a note between the stones. Following the prayer, Boy George shared his feelings, stating that the visit to the holy site brought to mind his family and loved ones. "When I stand here at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, I think of my mother, who would have so loved to be here, my father, and all the people close to my heart," he said. He added, "There are places where you can feel the presence of the people you love, wherever they are. This is one of them. A moment of gratitude, reflection, love, and prayer. I wish we could all find peace."
The visit to the Western Wall occurred hours after Boy George met with Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog and his wife Michal at the President's Residence. This meeting was part of his visit to Israel for performances, one of which will be dedicated to the Nova Festival community. Boy George, whose full name is George Alan O'Dowd, rose to fame as the lead singer of the band Culture Club and is considered a prominent pop star of the 1980s. He has performed in Israel multiple times and has rejected calls for boycotts. Since the October 7th attack, the singer has publicly expressed support for Israel and the Jewish people. Last summer, he released the song "We Will Dance Again," dedicated to the Nova community and the memory of those murdered at the festival.
The meeting at the President's Residence also included hostage survivor Elkana Bohbot, who was abducted from the Nova Festival and held by Hamas for 738 days, and Sylvain Adams, who later accompanied the singer to the Western Wall. During the event, President Herzog presented Boy George with a model of anemone flowers, symbolizing the memorial site for the Nova victims in Re'im, and thanked him for standing by Israel at a time when many artists worldwide chose to boycott the country.
Boy George shared at the meeting that his support for Israel and his decision to dedicate a song to the Nova victims came at a personal cost. "The song 'We Will Dance Again' forced me to grow up. A rock star should never have to grow up, but this experience opened my eyes to what is happening around us. It cost me many friends, some of whom didn't even say goodbye, they just went silent," he said. Despite this, he clarified that he does not regret his decision: "Even if I had written the song just for the people murdered at Nova, that would have been a good enough reason. But I have another reason: ever since I was 14, my life has been very Jewish, and it's becoming more and more Jewish. I don't regret what I did, someone had to do it."
