Hiker Dies After Falling 150 Meters While Taking Photo on Brazil Trail
Caio Rocha Aguiar Arbel, 44, died after falling approximately 150 meters at the Pedra do Macaco trail in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The incident occurred moments after he climbed onto a rock to take a photo. Another hiker on the trail warned Arbel as he attempted to descend from the rock, with her warnings captured on video.
A rescue operation lasting four hours was launched, but local authorities confirmed Arbel succumbed to his injuries. Matheus Mora from the local authorities described the challenging rescue, noting they had to navigate dense forest and use ropes to reach him.
Mora also revealed that Arbel was leading a group on the trail without being a certified guide and that he tried to descend from the wrong side of the rock before falling. The Pedra do Macaco trail is about 800 meters long and takes roughly 40 minutes to complete. It is a popular spot for hikers to take photos overlooking the lagoons of Maricá, Rio de Janeiro state, but has seen accidents before.
