Olympic swimmer Leah Polonsky set a new Israeli record in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:09.33 minutes during the U.S. Trails for the Short Course World Championships. The competition took place in Westmont, Illinois, between Thursday and Friday.
Polonsky's performance shaved 0.36 seconds off the previous Israeli record, which was held by Keren Zibner since 2015. Zibner, who represented Israel at the Rio 2016 Olympics, also previously held the national record for the 200m backstroke.
Although Polonsky achieved the fifth-fastest time in the preliminary heats, she will not compete in the finals. Foreign swimmers are only permitted to participate in the preliminary rounds of the U.S. Trails.
This event serves as Polonsky's final preparation for the Short Course World Championships scheduled to take place in Beijing in early December. She is also slated to compete in the 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly events in the upcoming preliminary heats.
