Israel's domestic security agency, the Shin Bet, has requested assistance from the Mossad, the country's foreign intelligence service, in investigating suspicions that Qatar may be behind financial transfers to a mechanism within the Arab political party, the Joint List. The Mossad's involvement will focus on intelligence related to Qatar itself.

The probe was initiated after the Chairman of the Central Elections Committee, Judge Noam Sohlberg, made an unusual appeal to Shin Bet chief David Zini. Sohlberg demanded an investigation into allegations of foreign funding and election bribery by foreign entities, citing suspicions of improper interference in elections by a foreign actor working against Israel's interests.

Specifically, the suspicion is that Qatar and the Muslim Brotherhood movement funneled foreign funds intended to encourage Arab voter turnout. Current information suggests hundreds of thousands of shekels were transferred from a foreign state to a mechanism of one of the Arab parties, and investigators are examining if this is part of a larger Qatari operation. While no confirmation has been found yet, the investigation is ongoing.

Despite these serious allegations, the acting director-general of the Elections Committee stated that claims of systematic damage to election integrity are baseless. Sohlberg emphasized in his letter that while he cannot attest to the nature of the suspicions, the involvement of external actors necessitates a thorough investigation to safeguard the purity of Knesset elections and prevent illegal activities aimed at undermining democratic order and state subversion.
