The military prosecution has filed an indictment against an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier arrested in September on suspicion of acting for Iranian intelligence agents for about a year. According to a joint statement from the Shin Bet, police, and IDF, the soldier allegedly transferred sensitive military information to his handlers in exchange for digital currency payments. He was reportedly offered $200,000 to travel to Iran, though it is unclear if he accepted or how much he was actually paid.

The soldier is accused of providing information on his unit's activities, operational readiness, military bases, and details about fellow soldiers and commanders. This intelligence could potentially reveal military routines and personnel to hostile intelligence agencies. His arrest in September followed an investigation, and his detention has been extended until November 12 as his trial proceeds.

This incident is not the first time Iranian operatives have attempted to recruit Israelis with high financial offers. In July 2025, two young men from Tiberias were indicted for being approached by Iranian handlers who offered them 200,000 shekels for a trip to Iran to train for an assassination of a senior Israeli official. Another case involved Mordechai Maman of Ashkelon, who traveled to Iran and met with local intelligence officials; he was convicted of contact with a foreign agent and entering an enemy state without permission, receiving a ten-year sentence in April 2025.

If convicted, the soldier faces a maximum of 15 years in prison for contact with a foreign agent or providing information that could benefit an enemy. Intent to harm national security could lead to a life sentence, but the specific charges and potential maximum penalty remain undisclosed. The involvement of IDF soldiers in Iranian espionage cases is not new; in March, an indictment was filed against a reservist in the Iron Dome system for allegedly providing information on Air Force bases and missile battery locations to Iranian operatives for money. In another case in July 2026, a soldier was sentenced to five years for admitting to passing two videos of missile interceptions to an Iranian agent.

Since the surge in Iranian espionage cases in Israel in 2024, dozens of civilians have been suspected of carrying out missions for Tehran. By February 2026, approximately 40 indictments were filed against 60 individuals recruited by Iran. A report on October 22 of this year indicated that nearly 100 Israelis had been arrested on suspicion of working for Iran, though not all faced indictments and some cases were closed. The current case adds to a pattern of alleged Iranian intelligence efforts to contact Israelis, including soldiers with access to security information.
