The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange experienced sharp declines following the release of interim election results, which failed to provide a clear political outcome. Stocks heavily exposed to the domestic economy were hit hardest, with the TA-125 index dropping 2.5% and the TA-90 index falling 4.5%. Specific sectors saw even steeper losses: the construction index plummeted 8.8%, insurance fell 5.2%, and banks declined 4.9%. The Israeli Shekel also weakened significantly against the dollar, which rose to 3.127 shekels from around 3.02 shekels the previous day, while the Euro climbed to 3.48 shekels. Long-term government bonds also weakened, with the yield on ten-year bonds jumping eight basis points to 4.12%, indicating a drop in bond prices and a broader investor reaction beyond just stock sales.

This market reaction contrasts sharply with the pre-election sentiment, where leading stock indices rose about 2% and the shekel strengthened on expectations of political change. However, the interim results have diminished hopes for a "change government," leaving possibilities for a broad coalition, a different coalition makeup, or even repeat elections on the table. One investment manager had previously expressed concern that a narrow right-wing government could lead to a 10% drop in the stock market and a shift of investments abroad.

Market professionals offer varying interpretations for the downturn. Some view it as a natural response to election disappointment, while others emphasize the economic cost of prolonged periods without a government or an approved budget. Yaron Friedman, Head of Research at Bank Leumi's Investment Division, believes the market's nervousness will persist as long as the political situation remains unclear, noting a significant rise in the local fear index to around 23%. He advises investors to remain calm and patient, suggesting that stability will return once the political landscape clarifies.

Amir Kahanovitch, Chief Economist of the Neto Group, suggests the current market behavior reflects an increased risk premium for Israel. He outlines three potential explanations: investor disappointment with the emerging results, leading to potential narrow right-wing governments or new elections; frustration with ongoing uncertainty, as markets dislike prolonged periods of ambiguity regardless of the political bloc in power; or a "buy the rumor, sell the news" scenario where investors who built positions before the election are now closing them, possibly including foreign investors given the sharp dollar rise against the shekel.

Sivan Izaskov, Head of Investments at One Zero Bank, attributes the declines primarily to disappointment with the results, noting that stocks exposed to the local market, particularly in insurance, real estate, and finance, are suffering. He warns of potential delays in corporate investments and household major purchases due to economic uncertainty and the impact on state budget management, potentially extending the period of a continuing budget. However, he also cautions against assuming a prolonged trend based on a single day's trading, as markets tend to be more volatile after elections.
