Record Demand Expected for Ski Vacations as Israelis Flock to European Resorts

An estimated 200,000 Israelis are expected to travel for ski vacations this winter, a significant increase from previous years, with demand driven by both the return of travelers who missed last season due to conflict and a growing interest in skiing among a wider demographic. This surge in bookings, double the number from the previous season which was impacted by Operation "Northern Shield" (Sh'agat Ha'aryeh), indicates a robust recovery and expansion of the Israeli ski market.

Industry experts attribute the growing popularity of ski holidays to increased accessibility and affordability. "Every year, about 20,000 new skiers join the Israeli market," stated Sharon Cohen, Head of the Ski Department at Issta Ski. She highlighted the availability of more affordable resorts, shorter trips to destinations like Bulgaria and Georgia, and the rise of festivals combining skiing with entertainment, which attract newcomers. Additionally, more families are opting for ski trips with young children, leading to an expansion of ski lessons and camps offered in Hebrew.

Yoni Waxman, Deputy Chairman of Ofir Tours, noted that ski vacations have become a staple in the annual travel routine for many Israelis, often considered as important as summer holidays. He emphasized the appeal of ski trips for groups of friends, families, and couples, offering a blend of sports, culture, spa, nature, and vibrant nightlife. Waxman also observed a trend of new Israeli travelers showing interest in skiing for the first time, alongside a loyal base of returning customers.

Popular destinations for the upcoming season include Borovets in Bulgaria, a family-friendly resort near Sofia offering 58 km of slopes and Hebrew-speaking ski camps for children aged 6-13. Gudauri in Georgia is gaining traction for its relatively affordable prices and suitability for various skill levels, with upgrades including new slopes and night skiing. For those seeking the Alps at a more accessible price point, La Plagne in France, part of the Three Valleys area, offers a high-level experience with more budget-friendly accommodation options. Pas de la Casa in Andorra is highlighted for its combination of extensive skiing, lively après-ski scene, and tax-free shopping.

Prices for ski holidays vary, with a three-day trip to Borovets starting around 974 euros per person and to Gudauri from 1,039 euros. A six-day trip to La Plagne in March begins at 1,689 euros, while a similar duration in Pas de la Casa in January starts at 1,299 euros.
