An unusual security incident occurred outside the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia, late Tuesday night when an armed individual attacked a police officer guarding the building. The officer sustained minor injuries but returned fire, neutralizing the assailant. Following the attack, Serbia raised its terror alert level to the highest possible.
The incident took place around 12:15 AM, hours after the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team lost a EuroLeague game in the city. The team remained in Belgrade for an upcoming game, and no changes to their schedule were reported due to the security event.
Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dačić stated that the attacker, believed to be a minor from Šabac whose identity is not yet fully confirmed, charged the officer shouting "Allahu Akbar" and wielding two knives. Dačić added that the officer acted in self-defense but was wounded in the face during the confrontation.
In response to the attack, Dačić announced the elevation of the terror alert to "red," the highest level, which entails a significant increase in police and special unit presence, along with heightened security checks at strategic locations, infrastructure, and crowded areas across the country.
The Interior Minister also claimed that the attacker was known to security services as a supporter of ISIS, citing his Instagram account which allegedly displayed the black flag and ISIS symbols. The injured officer was treated for his wounds and is expected to be released from the hospital soon. Investigations into the incident and the attacker's full identity are ongoing.
